Gas production at Sundalpur begins

Staff Correspondent: (21 April 2017) The production from well-2 of the Sundalpur Gas Field in Noakhali began yesterday. State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) has made the breakthrough after nearly three months of drilling into the new well.
Confirming the new development, Bapex Managing Director Nawshad Aslam said initially, the field can produce 10 million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas per day.
He, however, said it is too early to predict about the total potential reserve of the new structure where the gas was discovered. Bapex officials said there have been a number of gas structures in the field which indicates there might be a substantial reserve. New gas was found at a depth of 1400 metres under the ground although the drilling was conducted to a depth of 3200 metres. On completion of some scientific analyses, there might be a conclusion about the size of the reservoir, said a Bapex official.
The Sundalpur Gas Field has been an old one where one well was drilled earlier. But at one stage, the well-1 ran dry and subsequently the production was suspended.
Officials said once the Sundalpur comes into full swing production, it will play a major role in resolving gas crisis in the port city of Chittagong and adjoining region.
